Eye-Tracking in Instructed Second Language Acquisition: A Historical Perspective and a Call for Inclusive, Representative Research

Aline Godfroid is Professor of Second Language Studies and TESOL at Michigan State University, where she co-directs the Second Language Studies Eye-tracking Lab. Her research spans second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and vocabulary learning/teaching, with a methodological emphasis on eye-tracking and quantitative research methods. Aline aims to bridge psychology, psycholinguistics, and real-world second language learning. She has received funding from the National Science Foundation, Language Learning, the Humanities and Arts Research Program, and the Flanders-based FWO, and has published widely in journals such as Applied Psycholinguistics, Language Learning, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, The Modern Language Journal, and TESOL Quarterly. Aline is Associate Editor of Language Learning and Vice President of the European Second Language Association.

Cognitive Engagement During Reading

Johanna Kaakinen is Professor of Psychology at the University of Turku, Finland, where she coordinates the Turku EyeLabs and leads the research theme “Skills and Learning” within the INVEST Research Flagship. Her research integrates cognitive psychology, reading comprehension, and eye-tracking methodologies, with a strong focus on the neurocognitive mechanisms of literary experience. She directs the Fostering Finnish Science Capital (FINSCI) consortium, funded by the Strategic Research Council, and the IMMERSED project, supported by the Academy of Finland. Her work has been published in top-tier journals including Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, and Memory & Cognition. Johanna is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of Discourse Processes, one of the leading journals in discourse and cognitive psychology.
