Translating research questions into eye movement studies

by Denis Drieghe and João Vieira

Denis Drieghe is Professor of Experimental Psychology and Deputy Head of School (Research & Enterprise) at the University of Southampton, UK. His research explores the cognitive processes underlying reading, with a particular focus on parafoveal processing, word skipping, and foveal-parafoveal interactions. He has conducted influential cross-linguistic studies comparing reading across languages such as English, Dutch, Chinese, and Arabic. Denis has published extensively in journals such as Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance and Cognition, and is recognized for his contributions to eye-tracking research in reading and bilingualism.

João Vieira is currently a PhD candidate in Psychology at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom. Holds a degree in Psychology from the Federal University of Ceará, Brazil (2017) and a Master’s degree in Linguistics from the Federal University of Ceará, Brazil (2020) with a CNPq studentship.

Analyzing and reporting eye-movement data

by Bernhard Angele

Bernhard Angele is Professor at Nebrija University, Spain, where he investigates eye movements and cognitive control in skilled adult reading. His work focuses on parafoveal preview effects and the coordination between visual attention and language processing during reading. Using eye-tracking, he has shown how parafoveal information influences word recognition and skipping decisions, even in the face of contradictory context. Bernhard also conducts research on auditory distraction, reading in noisy environments, and educational applications of eye-tracking technology.
